"There are TWO major determinants of community safety. One is how many neighbours we know by name. The other is how often we are present and associated in public - outside our houses. Police activity is a minor protection compared to these two community actions.
- John McKnight & Peter Block, The Abundant Community

JRA PROJECTS
The PNRA enjoys a good working relationship with the JRA, and we have managed to achieve some successes in collaboration with them:
4th Avenue Traffic Calming
We are happy to report substantial progress on the issue of traffic calming in 4th Ave.
1. The PNRA motivated a stop street on the corner of 10th, and on the corner of Sutherland - both have been installed.
2, After working tirelessly for 4 years, the PNRA got JRA to approve budget for 3 speed humps on 4th Avenue, between Chester and 8th Avenue. These were installed in 2018.
7th Avenue Re-Paving
A major project valued at several million Rand - the re-paving of 7th Avenue on both the North and South sides - was achieved in 2018. This has made one of the major thoroughfares in Parktown North must more walkable.
Stop Streets
Stop Street: A 4-way stop street has been installed on the corner of 4th and 10th Avenues.
Having conducted its own study of pedestrian traffic, the PNRA determined that this intersection was much-used by school children walking to and from Parkhurst Primary. We appealed to the JRA for assistance in helping to take care of our children, and in June 2015, they agreed to add a four-way stop.

Having conducted its own study of accidents recorded at this corner, the PNRA appealed to the JRA for assistance. Following their own traffic studies, they agreed to install a stop street.
Guard Rails
Guard Rails at Steph's Circle: In June 2015, after two years of interceding with the JRA, guard rails were finally installed on two corners at the intersection of Chester and Dorset Roads, at the bottom of 4th Avenue.
